1997 Was a Baaaaad Year.

For your blog viewing pleasure, I am going to give you a list of the top ten songs of 1997, my graduating year. Personally, I think that most of these songs suck, and I immersed myself in hair bands and classic rock during the time, but what can you do? So here they are, the 1997 Billboard Top Ten of 1997!

10. Wannabe, Spice Girls
9. How Do I Live, LeAnn Rimes
8. Return of the Mack, Mark Morrison
7. Don’t Let Go (Love), En Vogue
6. I Believe I Can Fly, R. Kelly
5. Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down, Puff Daddy
4. Un-Break My Heart, Toni Braxton
3. I’ll Be Missing You, Puff Daddy and Faith Evans
2. Foolish Games/You Were Meant for Me, Jewel
1. Candle in the Wind, Elton John

Oh. Wow. ’97 was a terrible, terrible musical year! I’m ashamed of myself for bringing it up. I’ll be sitting in the corner if you need me. I want to ask what the top ten songs were of YOUR graduating year, but perhaps we all learned a valuable lesson here…the public at large has no musical taste. But if you’re brave enough to take the heat, let me know!

I received the most devastatingly gorgeous mask picture today! I immediately ran and showed it to my husband, it was so striking! Keep it coming, authors. I can’t wait to run them. The original call for your sexy mysterious selves is HERE.

And Monday I will tell you that awesome, awesome pitch session advice that I promised. Thanks for your patience. Rock on!

  1. Hmm, does that mean high school or college graduation. Sadly, the only song I recognize from your list is Elton John. I suppose they could have been blanked from my memory. That’s probably on account of I only listen to the ‘classic rock’ radio stations.

Nice trip down memory lane. Ironically, my post (minutes ago) is a recollection about my first paper in university *sigh*.

  2. Oh, you think 1997 was bad? I graduated from high school in 1987 (I am ancient). Here’s the top 10 songs from 1987:

    # 1 Faith – George Michael
    # 2 Livin’ On A Prayer – Bon Jovi
    # 3 Alone – Heart
    # 4 With Or Without You – U2
    # 5 La Bamba – Los Lobos
    # 6 I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) – Whitney Houston
    # 7 Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now – Starship
    # 8 I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For – U2
    # 9 Didn’t We Almost Have It All – Whitney Houston
    # 10 I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) – Aretha Franklin & George Michael

I hate Whitney Houston, always have. But oddly enough, I do not actually recognize the #10 song at all. It’s possibly the radio stations in my podunk town didn’t play it for whatever reason.

The 1991 top ten songs (when I graduated college) were even worse, though. I listened to alternative and metal exclusively at that point, though, probably to avoid Amy Grant and Mariah Carey.

  3. I hate Whitney Houston (and have no idea what song #10 is, either) but the rest of those songs are awesome! “Faith”?! Are you kidding me? Didn’t you watch at least one episode of Eli Stone?

I was also the biggest Heart fan growing up. Your year kicked my year’s butt!

  4. Top ten songs of 2005:

    10. The Killers – All these things that I’ve done.
    9. Eminem – When I’m gone.
    8. Gorillaz – Feel good inc.
    7. Goo goo dolls – Better days.
    6. Missy Elliot feat Ciara and Fat man scoop – Lose Control
    5. Kanye West feat Jamie Foxx – Gold Digger
    4. Mariah Carey – We Belong Together
    3. Fall Out Boy – Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down
    2. Gwen Steffani – Hollaback Girl
    1. Kelly Clarkson – Since U Been Gone.

I won’t say that 2005 was a terrible year for music. Some of this got my toes tapping. But…Kelly Clarkson? oh come ON, voting public! Are you aurally retarded?!

  5. Did I graduate in 2005? Hm. This is 2009… and I graduated a yearly… so, it must’ve been 2005. That doesn’t sound right though. Maybe it was 2006.

This is sad. I had to check my school transcripts.

Yeah, it looks like it was 2006.

    01. Daniel Powter – Bad Day
    02. Sean Paul – Temperature
    03. Nelly Furtado Feat Timbaland – Promiscuous
    04. James Blunt – You’re Beautiful
    05. Shakira Feat Wyclef Jean – Hips Don’t Lie
    06. Natasha Bedingfield – Unwritten
    07. Gnarls Barkley – Crazy
    08. Chamillionaire Feat Krayzie Bone – Ridin’
    09. Justin Timberlake – Sexyback
    10. Beyonce Feat Slim Thug – Check On It

It’s not as bad as 2005. I despise most of those up there on that one (or merely dislike for a few). I enjoy number 1 and 4 once in a great while. Their voices tend to get on my nerves quickly though. Number 6 is a writers type of song. I like it on principle but rarely ever listen to it. ha.

I despise or have a general dislike of the rest.

    2005 songs?

The only one I can say I even remotely enjoy is the Goo Goo Dolls’ Better Days. That was decent.

  6. We don’t have graduation in UK schools so I can sneak away and not reveal the year I finished school. Phew!

As for having the Spice Girls on your list, I think you should be made to perform 10 karaoke songs in penance. 😀

  7. Isn’t that funny how so many of us graduated in the same years? That means Natalie and I, and K.C. and Jameson went to prom together. Well, not *together* together, but the same years. Rock on.

littlegirlwithabigpen- I totally love me some Killers. But many of the songs on that list make me weep.

Cate, I’m a decent singer, but you put me up in a karaoke bar and suddenly I become illiterate and tone deaf. I wouldn’t be the one suffering as much as the audience.

Jameson, I’ve seen the way that you spin your word. And you lie.

  8. 01. Call Me » Blondie
    02. Another Brick In The Wall » Pink Floyd
    03. Magic » Olivia Newton-John
    04. Rock With You » Michael Jackson
    05. Do That To Me One More Time » Captain & Tennille
    06. Crazy Little Thing Called Love » Queen
    07. Coming Up » Paul McCartney
    08. Funkytown » Lipps, Inc.
    09. It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me » Billy Joel
    10. The Rose » Bette Midler

Yep, quite a roster for my high school graduation of 1980…crap, I’m starting to feel old(er).

  9. Dude! Alan! Those are some of the best songs ever! You can NEVER go wrong with “Another Brick in the Wall” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. this was what I was listening to when apparently I should have been listening to The Spice Girls.

  10. “You were meant for me” is coming up in the ‘Live from the Can’ series.

I haven’t forgotten my mask idea. I just need some time because I’m racing to finish a first draft. There’s no real deadline on that, right?

  11. Ray, I can pluck out a terrible rendition of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and that is IT. I appreciate your talent.

Thanks for doing the mask thing! I’m not going to start running them until November or so. Enjoy it, and of course your writing always comes first! 😀

  12. 1993
Someday I Suppose – Mighty Mighty Bosstones
    Sober – Tool
Man on the Moon – R.E.M.
Shamrocks and Shenanigans – House of Pain
We are the Normal – Goo Goo Dolls
Dogs of Lust – the the
    Freezing Process – Quicksand
Killing in the Name of – Rage Against the Machine
Slow Emotion Replay – the the
    Black Gold – Soul Asylum

The The? Quicksand? I don’t even remember them. (and i pretend not to remember Soul Asylum)
At least i got TOOL and RATM.

  13. That’s one hell of a list, Mercedes. Awesome stuff.

I graduated in ’92. Our class song during prom was “More than Words” by Extreme. Now what, exactly, were we all trying to tell our prom dates, anyway?

    HA!

  14. Rob, our prom song was “Reach for the Light” by Steve Winwood. Wait, what?! Who chose this song?! The dance teacher did, because he wanted to choreograph a be-yoo-tiful dance number to it for promenade. There’s a picture of me scowling and sitting on my promenade partner’s knee in our yearbook. Lame song. I was ashamed.

  15. I’m more than a little bit proud to say that I only recognize the titles of 3 of the songs on my year’s Top 10. I was busy listening to better music. 🙂
