Farewell, Strawberries

strawberry

I have been buuuuusy the last few days!  Slushing, trying to track down old contracts, and–oh yes–installing our in-ground trampoline.  Is it fabulous?  It’s fabulous.  But it’s also a lot of work.  For my husband.  My contribution has mostly been, “Oh, it’s lovely, honey!  I see that you’re drilling through cement at lightning speed!” and keeping the tiny ones from falling into the big, gaping hole that is our backyard. (What?  There’s only one drill, and believe me, people, you don’t want me to be running around with that type of weapon in my hands!  Plus I’m working on Halloween.)  I took plenty of pics and I’ll stick up a tutorial later.  There aren’t enough of them on the ‘net, I can tell you that.  I knocked myself out trying to learn how to do this.

Strawberries are insanely cheap right now, at least here in Vegas. They’re the last of the season.  I want you guys to try something.  It sounds horrendous and horrible, but it is a delicious, sweet, sweet treat.  Take a strawberry, dip it in sour cream, and then roll it in brown sugar.  Fight me all you want on this, but you’ll thank me later, I guarantee it.  We serve this at parties.

Or at least, we would.  If we had parties.

Also, I’m doing The Zombie Walk here in town. I’m going to drag the Illiterati out of their interdimensional wormhole, and we’re going to zombify ourselves. It’ll be fun, especially if they get the Thriller thing going, like I think they will. Maybe this will help sway me from vampires to zombies…

Nah. I don’t think so.

I’m suffering that post-story letdown that happens when you finish a piece that you were especially fond of. It’s like the day after Christmas, or right after a breakup. I don’t know whether to fling myself into the arms of a new piece, or reflect on the old one for a while. Maybe we can all go out to the movies or shopping. Help me get Big Man Ben out of my mind. I changed his title, incidentally. *sigh* So now he really is perfect.

  1. Ooh! You finished! Yes! No! Okay, maybe a big bowl of ice cream. Wait, Tuesday nights come all too quickly… Maybe you just need a long jog. Okay, throw yourself into your demon story! Yeah, that’s it!

Strawberries? Sour cream? Brown sugar? Intriguing. Very intriguing.

  2. I love/hate the post story blues. Feels good to know I’ve written something I like so well, makes me sort of sad to know the ride is over.

I’ll try the strawberries. Anything with brown sugar is a green light food in my world.

  3. You know, I was pretty excited after the meeting at the secret lair when we finished reading fmrly-BigManBen.
it is pretty flippin’ awesome, I say.
I can’t wait to read the finished product in some uber literary market.

  4. Dear fellow blog readers,

I don’t care how much you hate sour cream, how much you like cream cheese, or how freakish the strawberry/cream cheese/brown sugar thing sounds. Try it anyway. Just try it. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY can be more adverse to the concept than I was in the beginning. This is a call to arms. A chance to stand up and be men. Women. Horror writers. If you try it and absolutely hate it, I will personally write you a handwritten letter of apology. Don’t wimp out.

    Sincerely,

    Mercedes

P.S. Rock on, Aaron, for being brave!

    😛

  5. Post story let down always kills me. It’s the absolute worst. Maybe the strawberry/sour cream, brown sugar idea can save me…

  6. Okay, I will try the strawberry thing even though I’m in the “don’t like sour cream” camp. I do like French onion dip even though it’s basically just sour cream, so obviously I can make exceptions, and strawberries and brown sugar are high on my “like” list.

I am trusting you here. Although I may have to trust you next spring instead, since strawberries are expensive and not very good on my side of the continent this time of year.

  7. I think of you EVERY time we have strawberries with sour cream and brown sugar! I totally remember the very day you introduced us to that particular lovely-ness … Good, good times.

  8. Hey Mercedes!

I love sour cream – I love strawberries – not a big fan of sugar brown or white, but for you? I will try it. I’ll get back to you on this one. 😀

    Murphy
