NaNoWriMo Playlist

BigNaNoWriMo

The Write-A-Thon rocked.  I bumped up my word count, but my real joy was listening to my NaNoWriMo playlist.  Fantastic!  The music might just be the best part of NaNo.  It’s strange because I usually prefer writing in silence, but music and the push to productivity go hand in hand.  It’s halfway through NaNo.  Some of us are struggling.  Let’s put together a NaNoWriMo playlist.

What songs do you write to?  What do you think other people might find inspiring?  Leave your music suggestions in the comments, and I’ll add them to the list.  That way we can look them up and add them to our playlists if we find ourselves in need of inspiration. Moody, atmospheric, fun…what do you think that we’re missing out on?

  1. I’m not gonna be any help here, because I mostly work in silence. But if I’m in a coffee shop or the break room at the hospital, I have a very soft Celtic music playlist I listen to to drown out the voices around me. Also, I’m anti-social.

  2. I like Big Band music which most people under the age of sixty-five find nauseating. But hey, cats, it’s great for when you write light-hearted, free-wheeling stuff.;-)

  3. I have different playlists for the mood I’m writing…if it’s kind of thoughtful or solemn or if I just need to not hear words:

    -Zoe Keating’s entire Natoma album
    -Beethoven’s 7th symphony 2nd movement
    -Hans Zimmer soundtracks (Pirates II)
    -Bach’s cello suites

If I’m in something more aggressive:

    -Pantera “10s”
    -Kittie “Spit”
    -Misfits “Bullet” “She”

    More playful fare:

-Amanda Palmer “Runs in the Family”
-Less Than Jake “How’s My Driving Doug Hastings?”
    -Gogol Bordello “Start Wearing Purple”
    -Sweaty Nipples “Coma”
    -Sneaker Pimps “6 Underground”

Anyway, that’s a smattering of my weird playlists…

  4. I’m all about ambient music while writing. Sometimes slow & moody, sometimes trancey and upbeat. Bands of choice include Carbon Based Lifeforms, Aes Dana (not the death metal band), Cell, HUVA Network, Solar Fields, Lustmord, TIm Hecker and was just introduced to Vibrasphere. I’m on Imeem if you wanna listen 🙂 http://www.imeem.com/people/jY4kR_v

  5. You’re missing some Meatloaf, George Thoroughgood, Nickleback, Evanescence, anything from the Etheral genre and I’ve become quite partial to a lot of stuff from the Gothic Electronica genre.

You’ve already included heaps of classical stuff and then, for light-hearted stuff, almost anything that featured on a soundtrack from the 1980s!

The Celtic stuff sounds cool – I’ll have to check that one out. Suggestions?

  6. Ray-Anti-social? I’ll see it when I believe it. Also, what do you do at the hospital? I bet I’m there almost as much as you are. 😛

Masonian-you were playing something in the Lair last week that I wish I’d asked the name of. Before Belle and Sebastian. CURSES, that chance may never come again!

Becca-Swing was really huge when I was in college. Big band music every Friday!

Jeremy D- You did that on purpose. You know how many crazies are going to stumble across this blog after searching “sweaty nipples”? But hmmm, I’m going to check out these bands.

Mary-Great bands! I’m so checking out your link after 1000 more NaNo words! Thank you. 🙂

BT-Wait, what? Ethereal genre? Gothic Electronica? I’m not familiar with these terms, but I SO WANT TO BE!!!

Also, as to the Celtic…hit up Ray because he even plays the stuff, but go to Pandora.com and type in Celtic. More Celtic ANYTHING than you can possibly imagine.

Riley-You didn’t type anything here. But your email so rocked. He suggested songs 32-37. And is my awesome brother. And is 6’8″ so don’t tick him off or he’ll step on you.

  7. I have been enjoying Mark Knopflers “sailing to philadelphi recently.I normally like the moody Celtic/folk mix while writing.

For flute I like Will Millar’s “Lark in the Clear Aire.” (you may remember him from the Irish Rovers).

I also like the Local Hero soundtrack.

For Newfoundland traditional music, I’d recommend Great Big Sea’s “The Hard and the Easy.”

For easy listening Celtic Harp I listen to Ed Kavanagh which has great traditional Newfoundland tracks with flute and/or cello (I may be a bit biased here as he was my night school instructor in creative writing.)

  8. Be OK” by Ingrid Michaelson – LOVE IT
“Diablo Rojo” by Rodrigo y Gabriela
    “Poker Face” by Lady GaGa
“El Tango De Roxanne” by Ewan McGregor in “Moulin Rouge”
“Allegro Scherzando” piano and cello duet by Rachmaninoff… Read More
“Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major” played by Yo-Yo ma

That’s my random list of favs.

  9. Bon Iver – “Skinny Love”
Good Old War – “Weak Man”
Murder by Death – “Until Morale Improves, the Beatings Will Continue”

These are probably three of the most played on my song writing playlist

  10. You definitely forgot about Jeff Buckley. How dare you? and with that voice! :p Nick Drake for the soft, soothing voice, while keeping it nearly haunting for many of his songs. Peter Bradley Adams is a good one to add, his Longer I Run is beautiful. Hm. There are many others but once you get me going on music, I can turn out a lengthy list pretty quickly.

  11. There is one more I must add for you, Mercedes, because I think you’ll love them: Neverending White Lights.

You have to love that name. It’s fantastic.

“It’s true we’re always covering our lies
    Like a body slowly dies
Bound to fall, you call your angel down
    But she won’t be there…no
    Some of us change
Some of us just grow so strange

Please say you know that, you know that
    You won’t come back
Please say you know that, you know that
    You won’t, you won’t
Please say you know that, you know that”

  12. I’m a Brian Eno junkie (especially _On Land_ and _Another Green World_. Love that ambient music. _Stalker_ by Robert Rich and Lustmord is amazingly dark and atmospheric, too.

  13. Okay, this is my playlist for my NaNo book:

Nobody Knows – Queens of the Stone Age
Hazy Shade of Winter – Bodyjar
Coin Operated Boy – Dresden Dolls
It Aint Me Babe – Bob Dylan
    Last Nite – The Strokes
It’s All Over Now Baby Blue – Them
I Know You Know I Know – Tex Perkins
    Backwater – The Meat Puppets

  14. I haven’t heard SO MANY of these! I’m going to look them all up, eventually.

Shad-listened to Poets of the Fall the other day and thought of you.

Danielle- “Coin Operated Boy” is such a fun song! I dressed up like Amanda Palmer in that video for Halloween one year.

Keep the songs coming, everybody! This is amazing!

  15. “Ewan McGregor-”El Tango de Roxanne” (Moulin Rouge Soundtrack)” Amen.

I don’t listen to music when I write, but if I did the above would be top of the list along with:

Take a Bow – Leona Lewis
One Wild Night – Bon Jovi
    Fleetwood Mac.

  16. Mercedes –

Aha. I’m glad to be thought of when serenading yourself with tastefully observant music. 😉

If we’re to listen to classical, though, we should add Ludovico Einaudi. His Divenire and Primavera are wonderful compositions.

Pearl Jam is a must have on the list, specifically, their songs Jeremy and Black.

Ryan Adams: Two and I Taught Myself to Grow Old

Rob Thomas: Cradlesong, Fire on the Mountain, I am an Illusion, All that I am.

Tyrone Wells: Sea Breeze, In Between the Lines, More.

Hurt (it’s a band that you can look up with such songs as Well, Ten Ton Brick, and Rapture).

    Garfield Mayor: Softly Softly (Piano)

    Darren Hayes: Words, Walk Away

Brendan James: Early April Morning, Green (this song, in particular, Mercedes, I think you’ll adore).

Black Stone Cherry: Things My Father Said, Blind Man.

I think that’s enough to keep you busy for a while. 😛

  17. I hope you realized that the last post was me. Apparently, my wordpress account kept itself on the information fill-in.

  18. Gothic Electronica is lovely!

    My writing playlist(currently)includes:

    Asp
    Project Pitchfork
    Bella Morte
    Faith and the Muse
    IAMX
    The 69 Eyes
    Deathstars
    Eisbrecher
    Oomph!
    Das Ich
Kaizer’s Orchestra (seriously quirky, catchy and fun.)
    The Exploding Boy

  19. Ah, Jeremy Brooks gets ultimate cool points for suggesting Sweaty Nipples. Such a great band!

I tend to write to very atmospheric music—Dead Can Dance, Autumn Tears, Epica’s “Score” album, the instrumental/orchestral version of Nightwish’s “Dark Passion Play.”

    For instance:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GRl0Kk9YAE (Dead Can Dance)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeaIFOA6n9U (Autumn Tears)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nhQR00bT8I (Nightwish)

Then I also love writing to prog-rock/metal. Without the verse/chorus/verse structure, it almost focuses me more. It’s a bit too complex to start air-drumming to, you know.

  20. We were listening to Black Signature and Mew.
    🙂

Yes I have the magical power of wombatery.

Please add: Starflyer 59 to the list. remind me to show them to you. It’s wonderfully shoegazey.

  23. Since no one has said it yet, have you tried The Horrors? They’re great– in a terrible way. “She Is The New Thing” has an awesome video, and was totally the inspiration for a story I wrote once.

  24. Oh yeah, and another new discovery: I Have Come To Claim My Throne by Saudade.
Their sound is described as a sound-tracky take on pop ambient/haunt music.
    whoa. yes please.

  25. I’ve been listening to Eastern European-esque, gypsy sorts of music– Beirut, Gogol Bordello, Man Man, Balkan Beat Box, some Andrew Bird… and of course there’s Bon Iver, St. Vincent, and Fleet Foxes. You’ve already got a couple of those.
