Miss Murder’s Easy DIY: Glitter Your Walls

Shiny glittery sparkles!

It’s been work work work all of the time lately, and not nearly enough whimsy. Time to change all of that! Hey, Angry Ginger, what are you doing on Monday? Glittering my bedroom wall with me? Awesome!

I’ve been hearing wonderful things about a glitter paint from Martha Stewart, but I was attracted to the DIY aspect of white glue and store-bought glitter. There was something about it that just screamed, “Simple!” and “Amateur!” and “I’m waaaaay more fun!” So that’s what we did.

The recipe is one cup of glitter per gallon of glue. But who really follows a recipe? We poured an entire container of glitter in half a gallon of glue. We want this baby to shine!

Plus, my two-year-old was laughing so hard at the falling glitter that it was difficult to stop.

Stir the glue and glitter very well. Otherwise the glitter will sink to the bottom and won’t distribute easily.

Next, put your hair in braids, don an ironic tee, and spread everything out in your paint pan. Use a roller to apply the glue. Try to use something more stable than my Step Ladder of Death. Also, the tutorials I read said to avoid going over the same area several times. So this was really a quick, easy, and dirty job. Just how I like it.

ImageFinish up your wall. There will be that heart-stopping “Oh my goodness, what have I done?!” moment that will hit you when you see everything, but the glue will dry clear, for the most part. I also doubt most of you have dark navy walls like we do.

In our case, with the extra white glitter and dark walls, there was some white here and there. Not from the glue, but the glitter. I love the effect, though, because it looks like a cosmos. I think it’s beautiful! And it catches the light best in the morning, when I’m groggy and need a little bit of magic.

ImageEnjoy!

If you choose to do your walls, please let me know! I’d love to see pictures.

Also, don’t forget to enter the Goodreads contest to win your own copy of my debut novel Nameless: The Darkness Comes. There will be two winners!

Have a wonderful, whimsical day, everyone.

  1. Super cool idea! Am going to paint a wall in the little girls room in the near future and I think they’d love some glitter added to the mix 😉

    1. If you want extremely glittery walls, I’d suggest getting a glitter paint. But for the subtle glitter like I have, I just used some cheap glitter (yes, from Walmart!) and Elmer’s Glue. 😀

  2. Hello! I’d really like to do this in the next couple of days on my chimney breast. How has your paint lasted? Also, is Elmers glue pva glue? Sorry, I’m from UK and was wondering! Thanks 😊

  3. Hi, kirti! The paint has lasted beautifully! I’m still really glad I did it. PVA glue is too heavy duty. Elmer’s glue is simply the cheap glue kids use in school here in America. You don’t need something as expensive and tough as PVA. Any school glue you can buy by the gallon or liter will do. Good luck! I hope you enjoy it!

    1. I hope you enjoy it! If you want solid glitter, I’d suggest the glitter paint. But for a subtle sheen (and very little work), this is a great way to go. Enjoy!

  29. Hey! Did you use a roller to apply glitter/glue mix to the walls? I think this is the first one I’ve seen that used a roller.

  30. There are apparently there are two types of Elmers Glue, which one is best or did you use?
    1) Elmers school glue
    2) ELMER’S 128-fl oz Bonding Multipurpose Adhesive

Thanks so much, so far I got something that is clearly not working, not a clue . .

    1. Tiffany, I just used Elmer’s School Glue. It left a very subtle sheen of glitter when the sun hits it right. If you want crazy glitter, I’d get the glitter paint you can buy in stores. Good luck!

  31. I live in an apt and cant have this permanently or I will b charged when I move. Can this wash off since it is glue

    1. I haven’t tried to wash it off, but I’m pretty sure that it would work. It would be quite a bit of work, though. I’d suggest testing a small area first to make sure you can get it off thoroughly and not lose your rent deposit. 🙂

  32. Hi I have a plan to paint wall with glitters. I stay in India Tamil Nadu. Very difficult here to get glitter paints for the past 1 week I’m enquiring about this glitter paints but no where can find it. Whether we have to mix the glitter in the glue n apply in wall with roller. Or first we have to apply glue in wall then followed with glitter application.
