Deborah Batterman, Unmasked. And a Mother’s Day Giveaway!

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

Today’s masked writer,Deborah Batterman, just wows me with her picture.  It was taken here in Las Vegas, nonetheless!  Deborah is the author of SHOES HAIR NAILS, which I reviewed here.  As you can tell, I totally dug this short story collection. It was full of wit and heartbreak.  I know that you want to get your paws on it. And now you can!

Deborah has graciously offered to give away 4 copies of this collection for Mother’s Day!  Two lucky winners will win two copies each.  That’s right: one winner will win two print copies, and the second winner will win two digital copies.  One for you and one to share with your mother or somebody else of significance.  Does it get any cooler than that?

Entering is simple. Just leave a comment and you’re entered.  End of story. If you want to make it super fun, tell me a secret that you haven’t told your mother.  For example, I am eternally grateful that I have my mother’s eyes, but I’ve never mentioned that to her.  Let’s make this fun, shall we?  😀

This contest will run through Mother’s Day, which is Sunday, May 8th.  I’ll stop taking comments at midnight Eastern Standard Time, and I’ll use www.random.org to determine both winners.  The winners will go up on Monday, May 9th.

Enjoy! I hope you all get a chance to read Deborah’s collection.  It was truly beautiful.  Let the comments begin!

  1. if i tell a secret here, i am pretty sure my mum is using her newly deceased status to read over my shoulder…and the only secret i can think of that has to do with her is that i first became sure my church wasn’t anti-birth control when i found condoms in my mother’s bedside table. that the kind of super fun secret you had in mind, my dear? 😉

  2. Not sure about secrets… my mom would be getting google alerts in the great beyond, I just KNOW it. If she were alive today I would probably tell her that I love how sometimes (especially when speaking to my kids) my voice sounds like hers.

I’d love to win these books. 🙂 The collection sounds excellent.

  3. I better hope my daughter doesn’t read this blog . . . I used to read her diary to see if she was having sex when she was in high school, despite the fact that we were (and still are) very close. Her diary was actually pretty boring compared to the stuff she actually told me. 😉

My mother would have been appalled, if she’d been around to see it. Unfortunately, she died when I was thirteen. Come to think of it, I probably wouldn’t have told her either. 🙂

  4. SHOES HAIR NAILS features a fairly eclectic cast of characters, although I would say that for the most part, many of them, like woman at the center of the story “Nails,” are dealing with a sense of inertia, or at least a lack of direction in their lives.

  5. Now, putting a comment like that isn’t a great idea. Mothers now have RSS feeds. Let’s be a little smart about this.

I’m going to have to enter this.

  6. There are many secrets I haven’t told my mother. In some ways she understands me perfectly and in other ways she doesn’t understand me at all. Probably the biggest secret I haven’t told her is that I WISH I had taken her up on the opportunity to NOT get married to my first husband that she gave me the night before the wedding and that we had just had a BIG party at the reception celebrating my freedom from a marriage that I really didn’t want to enter into. Now that I have put this in words I will probably tell her because I am lucky enough to still have my mama.

    Ciao Bellas,

    Ardee-ann

  7. My mother would probably like to know that I now can understand why she would beg the heavens for help when we were out of control. They say Karma’s a b****. I have four children, when a fight breaks out I find myself begging the heavens to intervene.

    Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

  8. I am feeling VERY lucky today and just know that I will be one of the winner’s of Deborah’s book (that I’ve been dying to ready)!

As for secrets–it’s a little “risque” to share, but I’ve never told my mother (single at the time) that I was fully aware that we were sharing the vibrator kept in the hall cupboard!

  9. I do tell her this, but I can never express it strongly enough. I am really REALLY glad that I am basically a clone of my mother, rather than being much like my dad. I <3 my Mommy.

Happy Mother's Day to all the Mamas out there ^_^ <3

  10. Okay, my secret: It did help that she did the voices when she read to me. I like to pretend it didn’t–or that it’s the reason I’m crazy. I’m actually quite certain it’s the reason I write.

(She knows it, but you know, I can’t SAY it!)

    I’m in!

  11. Something I’ve never told my mother is that she’s a lot more patient and generous than I am with certain people. I’m lucky to have her. 🙂

  12. My Mom doesn’t know how much of an influence on who I am she actually was.

My Mom has no idea how a super liberal hippie like she could have an obnoxious sarcastic conservative son like me.

  13. A secret I haven’t told my mother? The only things I don’t tell my mother are the kind of things that aren’t git to print!

What a fun contest!! I love book giveaways!

  14. I got to chatting with a woman named Marge during some Blackjack at my father’s annual work picnic. After a while she said, “You’re so much like your mom.”

    “How’s that?” I wondered.

    “Fun.”

I couldn’t believe it. I was 21, married, and a mother, too. I decided there must be another side to my mom that she wasn’t sharing with me. The next time I saw her, I told her about it and asked if maybe she and I could be friends as well.

    I miss you Mom.

    Happy Mother’s Day everyone.
