Today we bought school supplies. New shoes. A school uniform. Socks that don’t have holes in them. My son was indifferent, but I threw myself at the supplies of fresh notebook paper. “Oh, yes!” Pens. Pencils. Highlighters and binders. I could have thrown the reams and reams of lined paper on the floor and rolled around in them. They are … Read More
Keep It Close. Keep It Safe.
My mother got after me a while ago. She is a wonderful, caring woman. She seldom gets angry, but at that moment she was absolutely livid. “Your father and I don’t really know a lot about writing. We don’t know which market is the better one to get into and we have no idea how this works. But we want to learn … Read More
Oh yeah!
I totally forgot that today is WIP Wednesday. To be perfectly honest, I forgot that today was Wednesday altogether. We’re floating in a sea of cough syrup and tissues at this house, and I’ve been pretty forget…what was I saying? Yesterday I polished up two pieces and sent them out. I have two more ready to go when their respective … Read More
Why, I’m A Pisces, And I Like Your Work, Too!
“So, um, I like your work.” It feels an awful lot like, “Hey, baby, what’s your sign?” It makes me feel like I’m going on the prowl, and that just seems…strange. But I decided a long time ago that it doesn’t hurt to sincerely compliment something that I admire. And sometimes something good can even come of it. The key … Read More
Ah, Childhood!
An old friend dug up pictures from high school and posted them on Facebook. They were pictures that I had never seen before, and we all looked so young. We had bad hair, bad clothes, and crazywide smiles. We had no idea what we were in for, and thought that we’d always live just down the block from each other. Looking … Read More
Friends Pop and Lock Together
While we’re on the subject of friends…
So Where Do We Fit In This Social Circle?
I’m in a social quandary. A Facebook social quandary, if you will. Egads…my geek is showing. So when this all began, I joined the bright, shiny world of Facebook and hooked up with my old friends. They’re lawyers now. Engineers. Teachers. Escorts. (We’re a varied bunch.) The annoying girl in high school that I didn’t like? Didn’t friend her. The … Read More
Your Last Glimpse Into My Head
I went to Mark Ryden’s “Wondertoonel” exhibit a few years back, and it was one of the most inspiring, bizarre things that I have ever seen. This painting absolutely enchanted me. When my friend was telling us about the exhibit beforehand, he said, “Expect little girls with big heads. And lots of meat.” Well. He was exactly right. I am … Read More
Day Nine:Grumpy Shark. And An Acceptance!
Hey there, Mr. Grumpy Shark. Turn that frown upside down!
Yesterday was incredibly sucky. Today isn’t like that, starting with an acceptance! “The Container of Sorrows” will run in the August issue of Pedestal Magazine, and I am really pleased. I had finished RunStarGirl and just hit a wall. Will I ever create anything again? Did I already do the best that I can do? Then one night I sat down and wrote “The Container of Sorrows”, and life was beautiful again.
So this counts toward the SFWA, but is it horror? I don’t know! But Matt should be scared anyway. Just sayin’.
And On An Unrelated Note…
I’m still inundated with people searching for “Asymmetrical bob”. Which rocks, truly. My favorite searches have to be “I’m 10 years old and in love”, “I killed you today”, and “poems about dead wombats”. Poems about dead wombats? Seriously? Also, once people find my site (awesome! People, woo!) the link that they click on the most is “Ultra Shorts”. Is … Read More
